Underground Sprinkler Design

The secret to a well-designed Rainbird sprinkler system is based on 2 principles

Factors in your yard such as grade (berms, wet spots, dry spots), and zones (lawn areas, perennial beds, and vegetable gardens, which all have unique watering needs) will affect your yard’s water needs and should all be considered when creating a custom underground sprinkler design. When you submit your plan to our Rainbird Designers be sure to include these important details.

DESIGN TIP: Ensure head-to-head coverage to avoid over or under watering.

Healthy lawns are watered deeply, rather than frequently, so timing is important. We carry sprinkler timers that range from simple manual control, to remote watering control from your phone, and even SMART predictive technology that adjusts the watering schedule based on the forecast. Add a rain sensor so you don’t water when it’s not required.

Standard spray or misting sprinkler heads will do the job but switch to rotary nozzles if you want the spray to go further or to stop water from being blown to your neighbour’s yard. Rotary nozzles are also a great tool for homes with low water pressure. Mechanical rotors rotate to cover larger areas. You can use them to control volume, distance, and arc, which makes them great for customizing your sprinklers to your landscape. For irregular landscapes with varying water needs (imagine trying to make all the plants happy in a yard with a lawn, perennial flower bed, trees, shrubs, AND vegetable garden!), an irrigation drip system can be added. Drip kits allow you to adjust water volume from plant to plant and/or from zone to zone. In addition to regular stocked landscape irrigation products, we can help customize your yard with specialized products if you want something a little different (home golf course, anyone?).

So you already have underground sprinklers but they’re under-performing? Here are some ways to troubleshoot the problem. When in doubt, give us a call and our Rainbird Specialists will help you out!

  • Coverage. Poor coverage can be the result of poor planning or of changes in your landscaping. This may be as simple a fix as swapping out old nozzles. Some heads can be adjusted to control distance and arc, which will help you to adjust as your trees and bushes grow. Consult our Rainbird Specialists on what nozzles and heads will help optimize the performance of your existing sprinkler system.
  • Pressure issues. Know your water pressure before you plan or install your sprinklers so that you install the right number and type of heads and nozzles. If you’re working with an existing system, you may adjust the water consumption using water-conserving rotary nozzles. The key to efficient watering is using the fewest number of heads with precise coverage.
    • An over-loaded line will cause pressure issues that can be avoided with proper planning. If over-loaded, you need to remove a head or switch to low-volume nozzles.
    • Older and rural areas are known for lower water pressure. Plan accordingly so that you work with the pressure you have and don’t overload.
    • Frost-free hydrants or improper plumbing can cause lower pressure (these are common in newer homes). If this is the issue you may need the help of a plumber to fix the problem.
  • Variable water needs. A well-planned sprinkler system will be designed with grade in mind. Low areas can cause puddling which will drown your plants and lawn, so be careful not to create a system that will over-water these areas. Similarly, high points like berms and areas in full sun may need higher coverage. While improper grading is a larger issue, localized water needs can be addressed in your custom underground sprinkler plan. Using a drip system, you can customize the gallons per hour within a single line to individually control the watering of trees, shrubs, perennials, and even your vegetable garden or you can customize entire zones.
